Bill Fleming Our friend and regular reunion attendee Bill Fleming, age 83, passed away on February 4 at Glens Falls Hospital. Bill served aboard the WEEKS during the Korean War. Bill was a retired detective 3rd Grade with the New York City Police Department. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anna E. Beck Fleming.  
Addie Kirven Addison We received the following from Addie son. My father passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in Falkville, Alabama. During World War II he served in the US Navy including service aboard the USS John Weeks and later at Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the original crew..
William Margetich On Friday Nov.7, 2014 of New Carrollton, MD; passed away He served in the navy on the John W. Weeks during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He was one of the original crew. He played football and graduated from Moravian College. He played in various Croatian Tamburitza orchestras and was also a Miami University of Law graduate and Congressional Investigator for the House of Un-American Activities Committee. Bill came to many of our reunions over the years. He was present at the USS John W Weeks plaque dedication at the the United States Naval Memorial in Washington DC in 2007.
Captain Jean Fitzgerald Captain of the USS JOHN W WEEKS [DD 701] passed away at the age of 88 on December 7, 2014.  He served on the WEEKS from 1963 -1965. The WEEKS was his first Command was his favorite Command he admitted.  He retired from the Navy in 1974 after 31 years of service. While in the Navy he was in charge of three destroyer divisions and later served at the Pentagon and at the War College and after retirement he made his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.   Within 2 days of retiring he became president of Tracor Marine which ran a full service shipyard and a fleet of oceanographic vessels. In 1980 he founded Broward Navy Days, an annual event in Fort Lauderdale,  that promotes the presence of the Navy and Coast Guard in the area.  In 2012 the Captain and his wife, Carol moved to Jacksonville, Florida to be closer to their two sons and  grandchildren. The Captain attend the WEEKS Reunion in Charleston and the Reunion in Jacksonville.  In Jacksonville he was honored  by a reception held by his former shipmates and he told a lot of stories that even his wife and sons  never knew about. Alan Cutcher,YN2 always mentioned the positive effect the Captain had been on his life and he became close friends of the Captain and his wife, Carol. Funeral services were held December 12th and he was laid to rest at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
John Metroka We were informed that John passed away in June 2014. He served aboard the USS John W Weeks 1958 - 1960 as a FN. No other information is available.
Pete Webster Paul Pete Edward Webster, 68, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013. Pete served multiple tours of duty in Viet Nam as a U.S. Navy Diving Officer. He left the Navy in 1972 to pursue a legal career, and after graduating from law school he served as an assistant prosecutor and a defense attorney in Columbus, Ohio, along the way becoming a U.S. Army Legal Officer serving in the Ohio National Guard. The law had become his profession, and he eventually assumed a federal judgeship in Peoria, Illinois before settling in Jacksonville in 1992. Paul served aboard the USS John W Weeks during the summer of 1963 as a Midshipman.
Norman Michael Zoumis We were informed that Norman passed away in December 28, 2002. He served aboard the USS John W Weeks 1951 - 1952. No other information is available.
Robert Martin Jr We were informed that Robert passed away in January, 2012. He served aboard the USS John W Weeks 1951 - 1955. No other information is available.
Edward Fennel Edward served aboard the USS John W Weeks 1950 - 1951. No other information is available.
James Fryar James passed away April 12, 2013. In 1944, he graduated from High School and immediately joined the US Navy. During WWII, he spent two years in the Pacific war zone. He was called back to Naval service, in 1950, where he spent another two years serving during the Korean War. He served on the Weeks from 1951 - 1953.
Mahlon Lynn Mahlon was a US Navy veteran having served during WWII from 1940 to 1946 aboard both the U.S.S. Babbitt and U.S.S. J.W. Weeks. No other information is available.
Michael Hackett Michael "Mike" Thomas Hackett, 72, of St. Joseph, MI passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. Mike proudly served his country in the United States Navy, aboard the USS John W Weeks from 1960 thru 1962
Donald Shaw Donald F. Shaw, 69, of Bangor passed away Monday December 15, 2014 at home. Born in Brooklyn, NY, April 21, 1945, he was the son of the late William and Irene (McGown) Shaw. He and his beloved wife, former Judith Charrette, were married 48 years on June 25th. Donald was US Navy Veteran from 1962 to 1966 serving on the John W. Weeks DD701 Destroyer during the Cuban Crisis .
Richard S Homes This email is being written by Dwight Holmes, son of Richard Holmes.  I don't know how many of you knew him.  He served 1952-1955 as an ET2.  Dad passed away on January 10, 2015 after a year long battle with stage IV bladder cancer.  I can tell you that he loved his time on the Weeks.  It set the stage for a wonderful career for Dad.  I have his World Tour book from that time.  Our family took him to the Pacific War Museum in Fredericksburg, Texas Thanksgiving of 2013.  There is a memorial plaque there of the Weeks and he told stories to his grand kids there.  Before his passing I had his photograph of the John W Week DD-701 restored and placed in a new frame.  He loved it.  If you wish to send any thoughts to our family, you may do so to me at my secondary email address of got_one2@verizon.net.

Dudley Overmyer Ron DePass informed us of the passing of shipmate Dudley Overmyer on October 6. Dudley was one of the original Weeks crew members. Condolences may be sent to his widow Kristie Overmyer.
Carl Santee Bob Mauger informed us that shipmate Carl Santee passed away on September 27 at Hundred, West Virginia. Carl was a BT2 who served on the Weeks 1968-70. He also did a tour of duty in the Army. Carl was predeceased by his wife Paula.
Bruce Campbell Bruce Campbell’s sister Sandra Hays informed us that Bruce passed away at the VA Hospital on July 13. Bruce rarely missed attending a Weeks reunion. He served on the Weeks 1951-54.
CDR Edward Torgen Passed away after a short illness on February 21, 2014.  He graduated from Brown University, class of 1950 and Boston University Law School, class of 1958. A retired Navy Commander, he served in both World War II and the Korean War, serving from 1945-1970, and for fourteen months on the destroyer USS John W Weeks. A member of the Rhode Island Bar Association for 56 years. Ed was a member of the USS John W Weeks Association.  He attended many of our reunions over the years; he will be missed by his shipmates.  
John B DeSilvey I received the following from John's son Dennis DeSilvey, Col Ret USAR, that his father passed away in 1985. John was one of the original Weeks crew members, he reported aboard in 1944 as a F1c.
Charles C Lewis "Duck" The family of Charles reported that Charles passed away March 29, 2009. He served aboard the Weeks in 1944 as a Sonarman. For obituary click here.
RADM Theodore C Lockhart We receive the following from Stewart Walls: Ted Lockhart died in July 2013 from complications of ALS.  He served on the "Weeks" in the 1962 - 1965 period.   Ted made a distinguished career in the Navy, rising to the O7 level and had command of the "USS Valley Forge" to cap his service.  His obituary in the "Washington Post" included many accolades from the many friends he made while in the Navy.  Truly an outstanding admiral and gentleman. CDR Randolph F. Patterson I am one of Randy Patterson's step daughters and, yes, he did serve as captain of the USS John W. Weeks in the mid 60s. He was proud of his tenure and my sister and I mentioned it in our eulogy. Randy's ashes will be inurned at Arlington later this summer (date not yet determined). We both would be interested in knowing the details of the reunion in Harrisburg. We live in the DC area and might be able to come up, if that would be appropriate. LT James R Wiggens I received the following from Mary. I am sorry it has taken so long to notify you of my husband's death.  He died April 19, 2013.  He served as the Engineering Officer on the Weeks on it's Viet Nam cruise.
H. David Ellington David's wife called to inform us that he passed away in December due to lung cancer. No other information is available.
John W. Stewart I received the following from  John's Son: It saddens me to advise you my father, John Stewart passed away earlier than expected this past Monday, October 19, 2013.  I know he was proud to be associated with both groups.  I have attached the link to his obituary through the funeral home. Jim Smith We received a call from Ken Wick a former Weeks shipmate that Jim passed away on October 19th of this year. Jim served on the Weeks 1959 thru 1962 as an IC2.
William Weddle We received a call from William's son that his father passed away suddenly due a medical condition that effected his immune system. He served on the Weeks from 1953 thru 1956 as a FT3. William attended several of our reunions.
Carmino "Moose" Longhi I received the following from Carmino's Daughter. I Wanted to let you know, my Dad Carmino "Moose"Longhi passed away 10/28/12. He was always proud of his service on theJWW.
LTJG M Hayes Kennedy I received the following from Hayes' daughter. I am the oldest daughter of Hayes Kennedy. My wonderful Dad passed away on August 21st, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas.  I am taking care of his estate and wanted you wonderful Veterans and friends to know of his passing. I was born while he was on the USS John W Weeks  and my first meeting, ( told over and over again through the years) was that our first meeting was in the Captains Quarters and I let go of my bladder the minute he held me…I was three months old. J  Dad found out he was riddled with Cancer the week before he passed and died peacefully . I thank you for your service and for the friendship you all have continued. My thanks, admiration and respect.

Verl Miles Jr My name is Kathy Miles and I am the wife (widow) of Verl Miles Jr.  Verl passed away on April 7, 2013.  We had in the past attended JWW reunions but over the last couple of years we were unable to due to Verl's health conditions related to Agent Orange.
Harry H Livesay I received a note from Harry's Son that Harry passed away in 1988.
Edward Cebek Ed served aboard the Weeks in 1964 - 1965 time frame as a Radarman.  No other information is available.
Ens Charles M ButterField In 1966 a Ens. Charles M. Butterfield was on the Weeks as the Main Propulsion Assistant and M & B Division Officer. I enjoyed knowing him and as a western USA resident I recognized the name, a family that started the Butterfield Stage Line.... I was doing some research while uploading a video to youtube and found his Obituary. Charles Michael (Mike) Butterfield, 71, of Isle Of Palms, SC, died on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Mike is a graduate of Fort Lauderdale High School and a 1965 graduate of the US Naval Academy. After distinguished service in Vietnam where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for Valor
Jame Dunbar I received the following from James’ wife Barbara. Sorry this is so late in reporting to you but James passed away last year. He served on the John W Weeks from 1949 to 1951. John Friedlich My father, John Friedlich is in many of the pictures posted on your website he served on the Weeks in 1940's . He died March 21, 1998 . William can be contacted at williamhf2@aol.com .
Nick Guerrera Nick passed away on July 22, 2013 after a battle with cancer. He served on the Weeks 57 - 61 as an EM3. After leaving the Navy he worked 42 years as a police officer for the city of Cincinnati. Sympathy cards can be sent to his wife Phyllis at 1202 Clark Lane; Dandridge, TN 37725 .

Harry J Smith My father, served aboard the USS John W. Weeks. He was aboard for th e Mediterranean cruise in 1949 - 1950. I recently came across one of his notebooks that detailed the ports visited and the dates. It showed that he spent Christmas 1949 in Naples, Italy. Harry Smith Jr. passed away on January 18, 1985 from Mesothelioma. It was presumed at the time of diagnosis that he was exposed to asbestos while serving as a Fireman aboard the USS John W. Weeks. No compensation was received, as the exposure was due to military service. We are very proud of his service aboard the USS John W. Weeks. He always talked about his experiences while in the Navy. Richard M Whirlow My father served on the USS Weeks.  I'm not sure how long he served on the Weeks, but I do know he was on the Westpac Cruise to Vietnam from 1/17/69 - 9/3/69He served in the ON Division and was Quarter Master Chief during the Westpac tour. Chief Whirlow passed away on 2/28/12 at the age of 84 after a short illness.  My father served almost 30 years in the USN and was very proud of his navy service. He was buried in Mt. Joe Bennett I was informed by Lt Dick Boles that Joe passed away. No other information is available. He served on the Weeks from 1955 - 1958 as a Ltjg.
Robert Godley I received the following from Bob's daughter Adele Evans. Robert Leonwood Godley, Jr., 75, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in New Bern, NC, he was the son of the late Robert L. Godley, Sr. and Irma Inez Jackson Godley and was the husband of the late Janet Sue McGinnis Godley. Mr. Godley retired from the United States Navy after twenty-three years of service as a Fire Controlman First Class. During his time in the Navy he had served on board the USS John W. Weeks during Operation Inland Seas during the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The USS John W. Weeks was the first navy destroyer to enter each of the Great Lakes and was given the honor of escorting Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip through the Saint Lawrence Seaway. A proud Submarine Veteran, he also served aboard the USS Daniel Boone, USS Benjamin Franklin, USS Nathanael Green and USS Requin. Mr. Godley also had served during the Bay of Pigs Invasion and was on board one of the first US ships to pass through the Suez Canal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US Sub Vets, and the USS John W. Weeks Association. Mr. Godley was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the International Order of Odd Fellows.
Mr. Godley is survived by a son, Robert Lester Godley of Ft. Worth, TX; a daughter, Janet Adele Godley Evans and husband Jeremy of Cincinnati, OH; a sister, Lourenda “Lou” Godley Godfrey and husband Gary of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, Ryann Godley and William Evans; a special friend, Dianne Hewitt of Arlington, TX; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laverne Godley Swerbenski, and his granddaughter, Megan Godley.
A funeral service will take place Monday, January 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating and military honors being rendered by the US Navy and the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Godley will be buried at sea by the United States Navy at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the USS John W. Weeks Association, C/O Bruce Neidemire, 7166 Big Ben Drive, Springhill, FL 34606. Alton Gunderson Ray Goodmuth got a call this evening from Tom Howe informing me that Alton Gunderson died on January 26, he served aboard the Weeks from 60 to 62. The Following is from the Baltimore Sun.

John D Hines I received the following from Bob Miller.  John D. Hines passed away 18 Dec 2012. I don't have the year(s) he served on the Weeks. His wife did not give the details except he served in the Navy 25 years. Another that he failed to get back to the ship on time and she chuckled must of had fond memories but, she said that before he married her.
John Olin I received a call from Bill Fleming notifing us that John passed away. He served on the Weeks from 50 - 51 as a Seaman. No other information is available.

Joseph Bailey We were contacted  by his son to information our members that his father passed away in November 2007. Joseph served on the weeks from 1946-1948 as a S1C. No other information is available.
Dean Baker Dean served on the Weeks 1962 thru 1963. No other information is available.
John V Cassidy We received the following from John’s daughter. I just wanted to inform you of my father’s (John Cassidy) passing.  He had been hospitalized in late May/early June having had bypass surgery.  The surgery had gone well and he was moved to a recovery facility.  It was there on late 6/18/12, that he suffered a massive stroke and he died just hours later the morning of 6/19/12.  I came upon one of your newsletters and was looking thru and I see you have a “taps” section.  I thought you might like to know.  My father was so proud of his time in the Navy.  He was first generation American – his parents were off the boat from Ireland.  He was very proud to be an American.  John served on the Weeks  from 1959 thru 1961 as a FT2. Iris Kemp Iris passed away Sunday morning just before 8 AM on October 7, 2012 . Robert and Iris was married 66 years. Robert served on the Weeks from 1944 thru 1945 as a Quartermaster.  He can be contacted at 3570 Northgate Dr. # 5; Kissimmee, FL  34746 or by telephone at 407-201-7316 .
Frank Laky I received a note from Bill Margetich a WWII shipmate that Frank Laky passed away, Frank served during WWII.  I remember Frank from the early reunions; he had one of those large VCR video recorders. We would record the reunions for Hal Gross.   His wife's Delores address is: 2016 Baker Dr; Allentown, PA  18103 .
Augustus Mark Bill Fleming called and said that Gus Marks passed away in June.  He served on the Weeks in the early fifties.  His wife's Letty’s address is 25 Manatee Ave; Sidney, NY  13838 .
Charles Walker Charles served on the Weeks 1950 thru 1953 as a CSSN. No other information is available.
Walter Parrish I received a card the other day from Walter Parrish's widow, informing the association that Walter passed away on June 19, 2012 after a long illness. James C. Clutter My Father James C Clutter served in The USN from 1959-1963 He was aboard the John W Weeks during The Cuban Missiles Crisis. He served in the Postal Service for 28 years, retiring in 1992. He recently passed away on May 7 , 2012 in Pennsylvania. Clarence L. Hughes Sr. Clarence served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, mostly aboard the USS John W. Weeks in the Pacific. He received the nickname “Baldy” at a young age because of his platinum blond hair. He loved his job of barbering and ran an old time barbershop from which he retired in 1995 at age 70. He is survived by four children, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many other relatives. You can contact his daughter Cathy Fletcher at : 800 Tawana Dr; Sidney OH 45365  .
William J. Lanning  Dave received a telephone call from Bill’s wife Doris and son that Bill passed away on March 3, 2012 after complications from triple bypass surgery. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Doris; two sons, Jonathan and Jason; one daughter, Suzanne Verdun. Will was 70 years old. Will served aboard the Weeks 1963-1965. He became the lead Personnelman on board ship. He was fun to be around and a very dedicated sailor and hard worker. He was responsible for stealing Dave Kurtz from First Division and training him. This allowed Dave to replace Will upon his release from active duty. Bill enjoyed attending Morris High School sports, especially wrestling and football. The son that Dave talked to is a former Illini wrestler and is the head wrestling coach, assistant football coach and teacher at Morris. Wilbur E Skees  My father, Wilbur E. Skees was stationed on the John W. Weeks as a radioman first class, from 1963 - 1964. He join the navy in 1944. He has since passed away and my mother doesn't remember the specifics of his stay on the Weeks. However, I have his "Subpoena" to the Royal High Court of The Raging Main for crossing the equator and becoming a Shellback on February 10, 1964 off the coast of East Africa.  You can contact Kenny Skees at  Kenny.Skees@Hoffman-Hoffman.com if you any information on his father.
Tom Wilson I received the following Obituary from Tom's wife Karen.
Thomas F. Wilson, Jr., 74, of Keene, NH, died on April 24, 2012, after battling with cancer.  Devoted husband, father, and "Pop-pop" to his three grandchildren.   He was born in Utica, NY, the son of Thomas F. and Gertrude (Sammis) Wilson Sr.. He moved to West Hempstead, NY, graduated from West Hempstead High School, attended Adelphi University, and later completed Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Business Administration from Columbia Pacific University.   Tom served in the US Navy aboard the Sumner Class destroyer, the USS John W. Weeks in the 1950's achieving Radarman Second Class.  He was the current Historian and former Vice President of the USS John W Weeks Shipmates' Association.   He worked for the Glens Falls Insurance Company and Continental Insurance Company in NY, starting at Peerless Insurance in Keene, NH, in 1976, and continuing until his retirement in 2005 as Assistant Vice President of Specialty Claims for Liberty Mutual Regional Agency Markets.   Tom was a member of the Keene Elks Lodge # 972, an avid reader of history and politics, adept at crossword puzzles and "Jeopardy", and loved to travel.   Survivors include his wife of forty years, Karen; his daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Kenya; and his son, Tom, and his wife Jen; and three wonderful grandchildren.   Fletcher Funeral Home will handle final arrangements. There will be no calling hours. Private services will be at the national cemetery in Calverton, NY.

John Demyan Bill Margetich sent me a note that John passed away.  He served aboard the Weeks during WWII as a TM3. He was a member of the original crew. Frederick Hugh Hart From Douglas Hart.  My father, served on the board the Weeks from 1950 - 1952. He attended several reunions and was proud of his naval service in WWII (USS Thornhill DE 195) and the Korean War on the Weeks. Richard Schwartz I got a call from Bob Godley the other day, he received a note from Richard Schwartz's sister.  Richard passed away in October from COPD, and numerous other health problems. He served aboard the Weeks 58 - 61 as a MM3.  Richard came to the first reunion opened to post WWII shipmates. Cards can be sent to Joan Wolf; 1053 Sutton Rd, Cincinnati Ohio 45230 .

Tony Johnson Tony passed away on April 23, 2011. Tony was hospitalized this week due to complications during treatment for lung cancer. His obituary is posted at the Padgett and King Mortuary in Forest City, NC. Tony served aboard the Weeks from 1954 - 1959. He was an active member of our Association.
Ronald Beasley I was informed by Alan Cutcher that Ron passed away in 2007. No other information is available. He served on the Weeks from 1965 - 1966 as a PN3.
Richard Lavera John Stewart inform me that Richard passed away in 2007. He served on the Weeks in the early mid 60's as an ET. After leaving the Navy he joined the Air Force and retired after 16 years.
Leonard E Jenkins I was notified by Leonard's wife Doloris that he passed away on December 25, 2010. No other information is available. He served aboard the Weeks in 1945.
Daniel T Healy I received an e-mail from Martin OConnor notifing us that his uncle Daniel passed away in 1990. He served on the Weeks from 43 - 44 as a Seaman 1st Class Radarman.
